Scrubs take a beating. Between back-to-back shifts, industrial washing, and constant movement, even the best fabric has a shelf life. Here are five clear signs it's time to retire your current set.
The Fabric Has Lost Its Stretch
Four-way stretch fabric relies on spandex or elastane fibers that break down over hundreds of wash cycles. If your scrubs feel stiff, baggy in the knees, or no longer snap back to shape, the stretch is gone for good.
Visible Thinning or Pilling
Hold a top up to the light. If you can see through the fabric at the elbows or seat, or if the surface has developed small pills and fuzz, the weave has broken down and the garment is no longer providing full coverage.
Stains That Won't Lift
Occasional stains are part of the job, but set-in discoloration that survives industrial laundering is a sign the fabric has absorbed more than it can release. Beyond appearance, this can also mean the fabric's protective coating has worn away.
Waistbands and Drawstrings Have Given Out
A stretched-out waistband or a drawstring that won't stay tied is more than an annoyance on a twelve-hour shift — it's a mobility issue. Elastic loses recoil with age and heat exposure from dryers.
Seams Are Fraying or Popping
